In all four ships have carried the name Soleil Royal but only the second ever won renown. She was launched from Brest in the late 1600s and took part in the battle of Barfleur, however she would have been remembered for her beauty alone the design and ornamentation were of such extravagance to have won a place in naval history. The battle of Barfleur began on19th. May 1692 and lasted for almost two days. Having been badly damaged she disengaged together with three others and was systematically destroyed by cannon shot and fire, by the Anglo/Dutch fleet. It was reported that her destroyers were ashamed to be a part of her demise. The Vasa 1626-28 was the largest ship ever built in Sweden at that time, she weighed in at approximately 1,400 tons and carried 64 guns. At about 3.30pm. on 10th. August 1628 she was towed out to open water to gain a head wind and upon hoisting her sails she heeled over so violently that the sea entered her lower gun ports and in a matter of minutes she sank to the bottom of the sea, here she stayed until finally being raised in 1959-61 and is now located in the Vasa wharf in Stockholm.
