''...A relatively small, deep draft and heavily armed snow. A snow was defined by having an additional trysail mast directly aft of the mizzen and only carrying a gaff for a loose footed spanker (no boom). This snow was built like her deep draft European ocean going cousins, quite the exception to most other shallow draft Great Lake vessels. The original was built at Carleton Island, Upper-Canada in 1779 and was lost in a storm with the loss of all hands. Ontario now rests in cold fresh water at the bottom of Lake Ontario, having preserved her extremely well and she is in a remarkably good condition to this day. Preserved as a ‘war-grave’, no further exploits of her wreck-site are allowed. This wooden model kit has been reconstructed from the Admiralty drawings for dimensions and detailed information and drawings taken from the actual wreck, having a quite significant amount of differences from the Admiralty drawings. She was a rather unique vessel.

Within the set of the semi-finished sails, which modelers have to sew and complete, is one single sail that is sewn completely, and modelers have to add bolt ropes and other ropes on it. This sail is an example of a completely sewn sail.

This MarisStella assembly kit has undergone several improvements since its inception. All the improvements have been made to make it easier for a modeler to produce a very high-quality model. When the kit was first developed it was made for experienced modelers. But, due to comments from slightly less expert model builders MarisStella has made many improvements and changes. For example, we improved the method of making the decks (and developed two possible building methods.) We tweaked the drawings, adding many more details and finally, we greatly improved the instruction book. Our latest improvement is using multi-part bulkheads to make it easier to work on the lower deck while building the model. This method allows the modeler to work much more easily. Now the method of construction is in phases, working from the bottom up.

Here’s an example of how MarisStella listens to our model builders. When MarisStella first started building HMS Ontario with its laser-cut bulkheads, some modelers found difficulty in sanding the Gun Deck and the interior hull sides (the Spirketting and Lining). To make this easier MarisStella has now developed multi-part bulkheads. Yes, it is more work, but the job
-6- of sanding the deck and interior hull sides is much easier and results in a more accurate model. Here we show you how to install these new style bulkheads. Each bulkhead consists of a Lower Part, Side Part and Upper part and features four square pieces marked with a ‘'B'’. These ‘’B’’ pieces serve to strengthen the side pieces of the bulkhead when glued to the lower part of the bulkhead. The upper piece with the correct deck camber closes the top portion of the bulkhead and supports the upper deck. The pieces of each bulkhead are marked with a unique number to ensure that each piece is placed on the correct bulkhead. The exception is the Bulkhead No.4. This Bulkhead is positioned on the very bow of the model. Its side and Upper Part are assembled as a complete unit. The assembled piece is to be installed on the Lower Part of Bulkhead No. 4 and fastened with four pieces marked "B".

In the MarisStella kit, we offer a choice between two different deck building methods.
1. On the lower gun deck, the first option is to glue laser-cut margin planks on the laser-cut deck bases, then making and gluing solid wood strips to the same laser-cut deck bases between the margin planks. However, you should note that when 1x5mm factory-made strips are used to plank the deck base, they are sometimes not exactly 5mm wide, but vary slightly. 5,1mm or 5,2mm wide is possible. Before using them, be sure to measure each one with a caliper. If necessary, adjust their width with a plane, sandpaper or a bench saw. My personal preference is to use an electric table saw.
2. The second version of the lower gundeck is to only use the laser-cut deck base. This version will free you from the hassle of making a planked deck, but a better finish and more professional looking model will come from using method 1 above.

This kit gives you the opportunity to use and install a 3D printed transom on the model or to install a wooden transom that you make yourself from the supplied materials.
In this chapter, we will describe two ways to construct a wooden transom. The first method refers to the production of transom using transom bases Tb1, Tb2 and Tb3, which should be bent into a regular shape and glued together. The rest of the wooden transom elements will be glued to the base.
The second method requires the use of a mold assembled from laser-cut elements. The rest of the wooden elements of the transom should be laid over the mold and glued. This is the better way of the constructing the wooden transom.

Plank the transom before installing it on the model. Follow the pattern from the drawings. Use self-made extra thin wooden strips. Make them from 0,5x5mm strips. In addition, use paper strips or simply sand the transom with rough sanding paper, pulling the rough sandpaper over it in the directions of wood grains. Plank or process all the surfaces of the transom, including the horizontal beams and vertical transom framings. The planking strips must be thin so that the transom stays tightly within the drawn measures. Especially mind the dimensions of the windows. The stern is an especially good place for your artistic expression on the finished model. There are interesting plank patterns and several framed areas, giving you the option to frame stained planks with painted wood, frame painted wood with stained planks, or some combination thereof. Plus, when finished, affix the ship’s name. It is photo-etched, brass sheet 0,5mm.
